Behavioral Assessment

Understanding your child's behavior to help them thrive, not just conform

Whether you're dealing with severe meltdowns, school struggles, extreme shyness, or suspected ADHD/Autism traits, Dr. K. Sushma provides a safe, unhurried environment to understand the root cause of your child's behavioral challenges.

Note on developmental stages: Tantrums and limit-testing are completely normal parts of toddlerhood. A behavioral assessment is specifically for when these behaviors are severe, prolonged, or severely impacting the child's ability to learn, socialize, or function at home.

Behavior is a form of communication

When a child is struggling to meet expectations at home or school, it is rarely because they "want to be bad." Behavioral struggles are often a sign of underlying frustration, anxiety, or neurodivergence. Our assessment focuses on decoding what your child is trying to tell us, rather than judging your parenting.

What we evaluate during an assessment

Behavioral challenges are complex and often overlap. We look at the whole picture.

Attention & Focus

Screening for signs of ADHD, impulsivity, and difficulties sustaining attention in school or daily tasks.

Social Interaction

Evaluating social cues, eye contact, and peer relationships to screen for Autism Spectrum traits.

Emotional Regulation

Understanding the root cause of frequent, intense meltdowns and teaching healthy coping mechanisms.

Anxiety & Mood

Addressing school refusal, separation anxiety, extreme shyness, and childhood depression.

Oppositional Behavior

Strategies for managing defiance, rule-breaking, and aggression at home or in the classroom.

School Performance

Investigating whether "acting out" is actually masking an undiagnosed learning difficulty or sensory issue.

When to seek help

Signs it's time for an assessment

Trust your instincts. If a behavior is consistently disrupting your child's life, it's worth exploring.

School Feedback

Teacher Concerns

Consistent reports from teachers about your child disrupting class, struggling to focus, or failing to engage with peers.

Home Disruption

Daily Struggles

When getting ready for school, mealtimes, or bedtimes escalate into severe, unmanageable battles every single day.

Social Isolation

Peer Difficulties

Noticing your child is consistently excluded from playdates, struggles to make friends, or prefers to be entirely alone.

What happens

Your child's assessment, step by step

1

Unhurried conversation

We start by listening to the parents' perspective. We want to know the history, the specific triggers, and how the behavior impacts the family.

2

Observation and interaction

Depending on their age, Dr. Sushma will engage your child in play or a gentle conversation to observe their social, emotional, and cognitive responses.

3

Standardized questionnaires

We often use evidence-based screening tools (like Vanderbilt for ADHD or M-CHAT for toddlers) to gather objective data from both parents and teachers.

4

Collaborative discussion

We review our findings together. The goal isn't just to hand out a label, but to give you a clear framework for understanding *why* the behaviors are happening.

5

Actionable strategies

You leave with practical home strategies, school accommodation suggestions, or referrals to specialized therapists (like child psychologists or occupational therapists) if needed.

Before your visit

What to bring

Helping us get the full picture

School or daycare reports

Bring recent report cards, teacher emails, or disciplinary notes. How a child acts at school is a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Previous evaluations

If your child has already seen a speech therapist, occupational therapist, or school counselor, please bring their assessment reports.

Videos of the behavior

If your child has severe meltdowns or repetitive behaviors at home, taking a short video can help Dr. Sushma see exactly what happens in their natural environment.

A list of specific triggers

Note down what typically happens right before a behavior escalates (e.g., transition times, loud noises, being told 'no').

When behavior is linked to neurological conditions

In some cases, behavioral challenges, severe ADHD, or Autism Spectrum symptoms require a deeper neurological evaluation. Because Anoki has both a Pediatrician (Dr. Sushma) and a Pediatric Neurologist (Dr. Pathi) working together, your child's care can be escalated seamlessly without you having to start over at a new clinic.

Common questions

Questions parents often ask

Is it ADHD, or is my child just being a kid?

All children are hyperactive and impulsive at times. A diagnosis of ADHD is only considered when these behaviors are extreme for their age, persistent, and severely impacting their success in multiple environments (like both home and school).

Will this assessment label my child?

The goal is never to put your child in a "box." Diagnoses are simply tools that help us unlock the right support, accommodations at school, and therapeutic strategies to help your child succeed.

Do you immediately prescribe medication for behavior?

No. Dr. Sushma typically explores behavioral therapies, routine adjustments, and school accommodations first. Medication is carefully considered only when non-medical interventions are insufficient and the behavior is causing significant distress.

Should both parents attend the consultation?

If possible, yes. It is very helpful to hear perspectives from both parents, as well as ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding the strategies we implement at home.

How long does a behavioral assessment take?

These assessments require more time than a standard sick visit. We ensure there is ample time to talk, observe, and review questionnaires without rushing your child.
