Child Weight Assessment

A supportive, shame-free approach to your child's weight and nutrition

Whether your child is struggling to gain weight, experiencing a sudden spike, or battling extreme pickiness, Dr. K. Sushma focuses on building healthy habits, metabolic health, and a positive relationship with food.

Signs that require immediate medical evaluation: Sudden, unexplained weight loss, constant extreme thirst and frequent urination (potential signs of childhood diabetes), or severe lethargy should never wait for a routine assessment. Please book an urgent sick visit.

Health is more than a number on a scale

Conversations about a child's weight can cause a lot of anxiety for parents. We don't focus on rigid diets or body shaming. Instead, we look at how to properly fuel their growing bodies, ensuring their metabolism, energy levels, and nutritional intake are exactly where they need to be.

What we evaluate

Understanding the full picture of their health

Weight is simply a symptom of deeper processes. We evaluate all contributing factors to ensure your child is thriving.

Underweight & FTT

Investigating "Failure to Thrive" (FTT) and poor weight gain to ensure they are getting enough calories to support brain and body development.

Overweight & Obesity

Addressing rapid, excessive weight gain safely to prevent long-term joint strain and pediatric metabolic disorders.

Dietary Patterns

Analyzing their actual daily intake, dealing with extreme picky eating, and finding hidden nutritional gaps.

Hormonal Checks

Screening for underlying medical issues, such as thyroid dysfunction or insulin resistance, which can heavily impact weight.

Physical Activity

Evaluating their daily movement and screen time to balance energy intake with energy expenditure.

Emotional Wellbeing

For older children and teens, ensuring that weight discussions are handled delicately to protect body image and mental health.

When to visit

Signs it's time for an assessment

When you feel concerned about the trajectory of their growth curve.

Dropping Percentiles

Falling Off the Curve

If they used to be consistently average weight but have steadily dropped down to the lowest percentiles over a few months.

Sudden Spikes

Rapid Gain

A sudden, noticeable increase in weight that seems disproportionate to their height growth or normal eating habits.

Eating Battles

Extreme Pickiness

When mealtimes become highly stressful, and your child refuses entire food groups, causing you to worry about malnutrition.

What happens

Your child's assessment, step by step

1

Accurate measurement

We take precise measurements of weight, height, and calculate BMI (for children over 2) using calibrated clinic equipment.

2

Plotting the growth curve

These numbers are plotted on standardized IAP or WHO growth charts to determine exactly where they fall compared to healthy averages.

3

Diet and lifestyle review

Dr. Sushma reviews your 3-day food diary to assess actual calorie and nutrient intake, as well as sleep and activity levels.

4

Clinical examination

A physical exam to look for signs of nutritional deficiencies (like pale skin or brittle nails) or hormonal imbalances.

5

Actionable, realistic plan

You’ll leave with concrete, pressure-free advice on diet adjustments, or requisitions for specific blood tests if a medical cause is suspected.

Before your visit

What to bring

Helping us get the full picture

A 3-day food diary

This is critical. Write down exactly what your child ate and drank for 3 typical days (including portion sizes, snacks, and juices).

Previous growth records

Bring older vaccination cards or health books that have past weight measurements so we can see their historical growth velocity.

Current supplements

Bring the physical bottles of any vitamins, iron drops, or commercial health drinks you are currently giving them.

Recent blood reports

If your child has had any bloodwork done recently (like thyroid, iron, or vitamin D panels), please bring the reports.

When feeding issues involve sensory or neurological factors

Sometimes, extreme picky eating, failure to gain weight, or severe food aversions are related to underlying oral-motor delays, sensory processing issues, or hypotonia (low muscle tone). Anoki’s integrated clinic allows Dr. Sushma to seamlessly consult with our Pediatric Neurologist to ensure all aspects of your child's development are supported.

Common questions

Questions parents often ask

Should I put my overweight child on a diet?

Generally, no. We do not recommend restrictive calorie diets for growing children, as it can harm their development and relationship with food. Instead, we focus on establishing healthy family eating habits and encouraging active play.

Will they just outgrow their "baby fat"?

Toddlers naturally thin out as they start walking and running. However, if a child's BMI remains consistently high past the preschool years, it is less likely they will simply outgrow it without positive lifestyle changes.

Are commercial protein powders good for gaining weight?

While they can provide extra calories, many commercial powders are packed with refined sugars. We prefer to help you fortify your child's diet with natural, calorie-dense whole foods (like nuts, ghee, and avocados) first.

How do I deal with a child who only eats carbs?

This is a very common toddler phase. During the consultation, we'll discuss strategies like "food chaining" (slowly expanding their preferred foods) and how to safely introduce new textures without causing mealtime meltdowns.

Is BMI an accurate measurement for kids?

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it is not the only marker of health. We look at BMI percentiles alongside your child's overall growth curve, diet, activity level, and family genetics to get a true picture of their health.
