Child Growth Assessment

Is my child growing normally? It's the question every parent asks.

Whether your child seems shorter than their classmates, isn't gaining weight, or is going through early puberty, Dr. K. Sushma provides accurate measurements, expert analysis of growth charts, and actionable nutritional advice.

Child Growth Assessment at Anoki

Growth signs that require prompt medical evaluation

While most growth differences are normal variations, some signs indicate a medical issue that needs to be addressed quickly rather than waiting for the next check-up.

Significant, unexplained weight loss No height increase at all over a 12-month period Signs of puberty (hair, breast development) before age 8 Extreme lethargy or paleness accompanying poor growth Severe, sudden increase in thirst and urination An infant dropping significantly across growth percentiles
If you notice these, don't wait to see if they "grow out of it." Schedule an assessment.

Genetics matter more than comparison

It is incredibly common to compare your child's height or weight to their classmates, cousins, or siblings. However, healthy growth is determined by their unique genetic blueprint and individual growth curve. We look at whether they are growing steadily on *their* curve, not someone else's.

What we measure

Key indicators of healthy growth

Weight

Weight Tracking

Ensuring steady gains without extreme drops or unhealthy rapid spikes.

Height

Stature & Length

Plotting height velocity to ensure they are reaching their genetic potential.

Head Size

Circumference

Crucial in the first 2 years to ensure the brain is growing properly.

BMI

Body Mass Index

Used for older children to balance the relationship between height and weight.

Puberty

Tanner Stages

Evaluating physical maturity and hormonal changes in pre-teens and teens.

Why families book

Common reasons for a growth visit

Short Stature Concerns

Worrying that your child is consistently the shortest in their age group.

Underweight & Picky Eating

Fears that extreme picky eating or lack of appetite is stunting their physical development.

Rapid Weight Gain / Obesity

Addressing sudden weight gain to prevent long-term metabolic or joint issues respectfully.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Checking for underlying issues like anemia (low iron), Vitamin D, or calcium deficiencies.

Early or Delayed Puberty

Evaluating if physical maturity is happening too soon or seems to be completely stalled.

Genetic Target Height

Calculating the estimated adult height based on both parents to set realistic expectations.

What actually happens

Your child's assessment, step by step

A growth assessment is much more than stepping on a scale.

1

Accurate measurement

We take precise measurements of height, weight, and head circumference (for infants) using calibrated clinic equipment.

2

Plotting the curve

These numbers are plotted on standardized IAP (Indian Academy of Pediatrics) or WHO growth charts to see exactly where they fall compared to historical data.

3

Medical and dietary history

Dr. Sushma reviews what your child eats in a typical week, their activity levels, and any frequent illnesses that might be draining their energy.

4

Physical examination

A thorough exam to look for physical signs of nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or underlying syndromes.

5

Creating an action plan

You’ll leave with concrete advice on diet adjustments, necessary vitamin supplements, or requisitions for specific blood or bone-age tests if needed.

Before your visit

What to bring

A little preparation helps a lot

Previous growth records

This is crucial. Bring older vaccination cards or baby books that have past weights and heights recorded so we can see their growth velocity over time.

A 3-day diet diary

Write down exactly what your child ate and drank for 3 typical days (include snacks and juices) so we can assess actual calorie and nutrient intake.

Current supplements

Bring bottles of any vitamins, iron drops, or nutritional powders (like Pediasure) you are currently giving them.

Parents' heights

We need the biological mother and father's exact heights to calculate the child's genetic potential (Mid-Parental Height).

If the concern involves head size or neurological development

During infant growth checks, measuring head circumference is critical. If a baby's head is growing too rapidly (Macrocephaly) or too slowly (Microcephaly), it can indicate fluid buildup or brain development issues. Anoki’s unique integration means Dr. Sushma can immediately consult Dr. Pathi (Pediatric Neurosurgeon) to safely evaluate these specific concerns.

Common questions

Questions parents often ask

My child is in the 10th percentile for height. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. Being in the 10th percentile simply means they are shorter than 90% of their peers. If their parents are also shorter, and the child is growing consistently along that 10th percentile curve without dropping, they are likely perfectly healthy.

Will commercial health drinks or powders increase my child's height?

No specific drink can magically increase genetic height. While these supplements can help underweight children meet their calorie requirements, a balanced diet of natural, whole foods is always the preferred foundation for growth.

What is a bone age X-ray?

It is a simple X-ray of the left hand and wrist. It helps us see if a child's bones are maturing faster or slower than their actual chronological age, which is crucial for predicting final adult height and identifying hormonal issues.

How do I get my picky eater to gain weight?

During the consultation, we focus on identifying hidden calorie deficits and establishing healthy mealtime routines. We'll discuss fortifying the foods they *do* eat, rather than forcing foods that cause dinnertime battles.

Can a child be overweight but still undernourished?

Yes. A diet high in processed calories but low in vital nutrients can lead to a child being overweight while simultaneously suffering from iron, vitamin D, or calcium deficiencies.
