Child Height and Growth Monitoring

Tracking your child's true genetic potential, step by steady step

Is your child growing as expected? Dr. K. Sushma provides precise height and weight tracking, analyzes growth velocity, and helps you understand whether their stature is a normal genetic variation or a sign of an underlying issue.

A pediatrician monitoring a child's height and growth

Growth signs that require prompt medical evaluation: If your child experiences significant, unexplained weight loss, has zero height increase over a 12-month period, or shows signs of puberty before age 8, schedule an assessment promptly rather than waiting.

Genetics matter more than comparisons

It is incredibly common to compare your child's height to their classmates or cousins. However, healthy growth is determined by their unique genetic blueprint. We focus on ensuring they are making steady, consistent progress along *their* personal curve, rather than comparing them to the tallest child in the room.

What we measure

Key indicators of healthy physical growth

We use precise clinical measurements to evaluate every aspect of your child's physical development over time.

Height Velocity

Tracking exactly how many centimeters they grow year-over-year to ensure their growth isn't slowing down prematurely.

Weight & BMI

Ensuring weight gain is proportional to height growth, preventing both severe underweight issues and early metabolic risks.

Genetic Target Height

Calculating the "Mid-Parental Height" based on the biological parents to set a realistic, scientific expectation for their adult stature.

Puberty Monitoring

Evaluating physical maturity to ensure puberty hasn't started too early (which can stunt final height) or delayed too long.

Nutritional Screening

Checking for hidden deficiencies in crucial growth fuels like Iron, Calcium, and Vitamin D.

Bone Age Referrals

When necessary, coordinating an X-ray of the hand to see if their skeletal age matches their actual age, indicating remaining growth potential.

When to visit

Common reasons parents book a height check

When you feel concerned about the numbers on the scale or the marks on the doorframe.

Short Stature

Consistently Small

Worrying that your child is consistently the shortest in their age group and isn't outgrowing their clothes or shoes.

Crossing Percentiles

Falling Off the Curve

If they used to be in the 50th percentile for height but have steadily dropped down to the 10th percentile over a few years.

Picky Eating

Poor Weight Gain

Fears that extreme picky eating or lack of appetite is not just affecting their weight, but actively stunting their height.

What happens

Your child's assessment, step by step

1

Precise clinical measurement

We take accurate measurements of height and weight using calibrated clinic equipment. No more guessing with a tape measure at home.

2

Plotting the growth curve

These numbers are plotted on standardized IAP or WHO growth charts alongside their historical data to determine their exact growth velocity.

3

Calculating genetic potential

Dr. Sushma calculates the target adult height range based on both parents to see if the child's current trajectory matches their genetics.

4

Physical and nutritional exam

A thorough exam to look for physical signs of nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or underlying syndromes.

5

Creating an action plan

You’ll leave with concrete advice on diet adjustments, necessary vitamin supplements, or requisitions for specific blood or bone-age tests if needed.

Before your visit

What to bring

Helping us get the full picture

Previous growth records

This is crucial. Bring older vaccination cards, school records, or baby books that have past weights and heights recorded so we can calculate their growth velocity over time.

Parents' heights

We need the biological mother and father's exact heights to calculate the child's genetic potential (Mid-Parental Height). If possible, measure yourselves accurately before coming.

A 3-day diet diary

Write down exactly what your child ate and drank for 3 typical days (include snacks and juices) so we can assess actual calorie and nutrient intake.

Recent blood reports

If they have recently had a CBC, Thyroid, or Vitamin D panel done, please bring those reports.

Common questions

Questions parents often ask

My child is in the 10th percentile for height. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. Being in the 10th percentile simply means they are shorter than 90% of their peers. If their parents are also shorter, and the child is growing consistently along that 10th percentile curve without dropping, they are likely perfectly healthy.

Will commercial health drinks or powders increase my child's height?

No specific powder or drink can magically increase genetic height. While these supplements can help underweight children meet their calorie requirements, a balanced diet of natural foods and proper sleep are the true foundations for reaching their genetic potential.

What is a bone age X-ray?

It is a simple X-ray of the left hand and wrist. It helps us see if a child's bones are maturing faster or slower than their actual chronological age. If their bone age is 'delayed', it means they still have plenty of time left to grow.

When do growth spurts usually happen?

The most rapid growth occurs in the first year of life. After that, growth is steady until puberty, when children experience a major 'pubertal growth spurt'. This typically happens around ages 10-14 for girls and 12-16 for boys.

Can poor sleep affect my child's height?

Yes. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is primarily released during deep sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation or disrupted sleep can absolutely interfere with a child's optimal physical growth.
