Neck Pain Consultation

Finding the true cause of your neck pain and arm numbness

If chronic neck stiffness, sharp cervical pain, or numbness radiating down your arm is limiting your daily life, a specialized consultation helps us pinpoint the exact nerve or structural issue and build a targeted, conservative-first plan for relief.

Most neck pain doesn't require surgery

While a stiff neck or radiating arm pain can be highly alarming, the cervical spine responds incredibly well to conservative care. Our evaluation focuses on identifying exactly which nerve or joint is compressed, allowing us to build a precise plan that helps you heal and avoid unnecessary procedures.

What actually happens

Your consultation, step by step

Here is how we untangle the exact cause of your neck and arm pain.

1

Mapping your pain triggers

We start by discussing your symptoms in detail. Does looking up cause sharp pain? Are your fingers tingling? The location of any numbness in your hand tells us exactly which cervical nerve is likely involved.

2

A targeted neurological exam

We conduct a hands-on assessment to check your neck's range of motion, test your reflexes, and evaluate grip strength and sensation in your arms and hands to gauge nerve function.

3

Reviewing or ordering imaging

If you have an MRI or X-ray of your cervical spine, we review the images with you on the screen. If you haven't had imaging and your clinical exam warrants it, we will arrange for scans.

4

Identifying the "generator"

We connect the physical exam findings directly to your imaging to identify the anatomical structure—whether it's a herniated disc or an arthritic facet joint—causing the irritation.

5

Exploring non-surgical treatments

The vast majority of neck issues can be resolved without surgery. We focus on targeted cervical physical therapy, posture correction, or specific epidural steroid injections.

6

Creating a clear action plan

You leave with a step-by-step recovery plan, knowing exactly what interventions we are trying first, and what our backup options are if conservative care isn't enough.

In plain language

A few things worth knowing beforehand

Radiating Pain (Radiculopathy) Key Concept

If you have numbness, tingling, or pain shooting down your arm or into your fingers, the problem is rarely in your arm itself. It usually means a nerve root is being pinched up in your neck.

'Tech Neck' is a real problem

Constantly looking down at phones or laptops forces the cervical spine to support extra weight, leading to chronic muscle strain and, over time, accelerated wear and tear on the discs.

Spinal Cord vs. Nerve Roots

The neck houses both the spinal cord and exiting nerve roots. While a pinched nerve causes arm pain, pressure on the spinal cord itself (myelopathy) is more serious and can affect your balance and leg function.

We treat you, not just the MRI

Many adults have "abnormal" cervical MRIs but no pain. We ensure your physical symptoms perfectly match the abnormalities on the scan before recommending any invasive treatment.

Before your visit

How to prepare

A little preparation makes the conversation easier

Bring any previous imaging

If you've had an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan of your neck recently, please bring the actual physical films or disc. Reviewing the images directly is critical to your consultation.

Map your arm symptoms

Take note of exactly which fingers feel numb or tingly (e.g., thumb vs. pinky). Different cervical nerves control different fingers, so this is a crucial diagnostic clue.

List your current treatments

Write down any medications you take for the pain, as well as past treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic care, or injections, and note whether they provided relief.

Dress comfortably

We will check your neck's range of motion, shoulder strength, and reflexes. Wearing loose, comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your neck or arms is highly recommended.

What happens next

Possible outcomes of your evaluation

Here is what your personalized treatment journey might include moving forward.

First Line

Targeted Physical Therapy

A prescription for specific rehabilitative exercises designed to improve posture, strengthen neck muscles, and relieve pressure on cervical nerves.

Common

Pain Management

Utilizing targeted cervical epidural steroid injections or nerve blocks to rapidly decrease inflammation and break the pain cycle.

If needed

Diagnostic Scans

Ordering a new MRI or specialized X-rays if we need a clearer picture of your cervical nerve roots or spinal cord compression.

Rarely

Surgical Discussion

If conservative care fails or if there is dangerous spinal cord compression, we will thoroughly discuss minimally invasive cervical surgery options.

Common questions

Questions patients often have

Why is my hand going numb if the problem is in my neck?

The nerves that provide sensation and strength to your arms and hands all originate in your cervical spine (neck). If a disc herniates or a bone spur forms in your neck, it can pinch one of these nerve roots, sending signals of pain, tingling, or numbness all the way down into your fingers.

Will I need to wear a neck brace?

Usually, no. While soft collars are occasionally used for very short-term relief, prolonged use of a neck brace can actually weaken your neck muscles and worsen the problem over time. We generally encourage gentle movement and targeted physical therapy.

Do I need an MRI right away?

Not always. Many instances of neck pain can be diagnosed clinically and treated with physical therapy first. We typically order an MRI if you have significant radiating arm pain, numbness, weakness, or if your symptoms don't improve with initial conservative care.

If I need neck surgery, is it always a spinal fusion?

No. While cervical fusions are common and effective for certain conditions, modern neurosurgery offers alternatives like artificial disc replacements or posterior cervical decompressions, which can relieve nerve pressure while preserving the natural motion of your neck.
