Gentle, expert care for your baby's very first days at home

Bringing a newborn home is a joyous but overwhelming experience. Dr. K. Sushma provides specialized care for the crucial first 28 days—from jaundice checks and weight monitoring to feeding support—ensuring your baby’s start in life is healthy and safe.

A pediatrician gently examining a newborn baby

A fever in a newborn is ALWAYS an emergency. If your baby (under 3 months) has a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, or is struggling to breathe, do not wait for an appointment. Go to the nearest pediatric emergency room immediately.

You are doing great, and we are here to help

What we monitor

Crucial checks in the first month

Newborn consultations are specifically focused on the immediate transitions your baby makes after leaving the hospital.

Jaundice Screening

Monitoring skin yellowing and checking bilirubin levels to ensure their liver is processing properly.

Weight Recovery

Babies naturally lose weight after birth. We track them carefully to ensure they regain their birth weight within 10-14 days.

Feeding & Latching

Providing expert support for breastfeeding mothers, assessing latch, or guiding safe formula preparation and volumes.

Umbilical Cord Care

Checking the stump for proper healing, advising on hygiene, and ensuring there are no signs of infection.

Newborn Reflexes

Testing primal reflexes (like rooting, grasping, and the Moro reflex) to establish a healthy neurological baseline.

Parental Well-being

Checking in on maternal recovery, postpartum mood, and answering the endless questions that come with a new baby.

When to visit

The early check-up rhythm

In the first month, visits are frequent to ensure feeding is established and weight is on track.

Day 3 to 5

The First Check

Usually 1-2 days after hospital discharge. Crucial for checking jaundice, weight loss, and early feeding success.

2 Weeks

The Weight Check

Ensuring the baby has successfully returned to or surpassed their original birth weight and the umbilical stump is healing.

1 Month

The Milestone Check

A comprehensive review of the first four weeks, assessing early visual tracking, head control, and establishing sleep safety.

[Always follow the specific follow-up schedule provided by Dr. Sushma or your discharging hospital.]

What happens

What your newborn's review includes

1

Reviewing the birth history

We start by discussing the delivery, gestational age, birth weight, and any complications that occurred in the hospital.

2

Naked weight and measurements

Your baby is weighed completely naked (without a diaper) on a highly accurate infant scale to track micro-changes in weight.

3

A head-to-toe gentle exam

Dr. Sushma checks the fontanelles (soft spots), listens to the heart for murmurs, checks hip joints, and examines the skin for newborn rashes.

4

Feeding observation

If you are struggling with feeding, we can observe a feed in the clinic to offer adjustments and practical support.

5

Reassurance and routine building

Leaving you with a clear plan on how often to feed, signs of healthy digestion (tracking wet/dirty diapers), and safe sleep guidelines.

Before your visit

What to bring

Helping the visit go smoothly

Hospital discharge summary

This is the most important document for the first visit. It contains birth weight, blood group, Apgar scores, and early vaccines given.

A diaper log

Keep a rough count of how many wet (urine) and dirty (stool) diapers your baby produces in 24 hours. It’s the best way to know if they are eating enough.

A fully stocked diaper bag

Bring extra diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and a warm blanket, as babies are examined undressed and often get cold (or have accidents!).

Your list of questions

Sleep deprivation makes it easy to forget. Write your questions down on your phone as you think of them during the night.

Common questions

Questions new parents often ask

Is it normal for my newborn to sleep all day?

Yes, newborns typically sleep 14 to 17 hours a day. However, they should wake (or be gently woken) every 2 to 3 hours to feed, especially in the first two weeks until they have regained their birth weight.

How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

The most reliable signs are healthy weight gain and output. After the first week, a well-fed baby should have at least 6 heavy wet diapers and 3-4 dirty diapers every 24 hours.

When will the umbilical cord stump fall off?

The stump usually dries up and falls off on its own within 1 to 3 weeks. Keep it clean and dry. Never pull on it, even if it looks like it is hanging by a thread.

My baby has tiny white bumps on their nose. What is it?

Those are likely "milia," which are very common, harmless newborn skin cysts. They will disappear on their own within a few weeks without any creams or treatments.

Why does my baby sound congested or sneezy?

Newborns have very tiny nasal passages and often sneeze to clear amniotic fluid and dust. As long as they are breathing comfortably and feeding well, occasional sneezes or sniffles are normal.
