Clear answers for persistent infections and recurring illnesses

Whether your child seems to catch every bug at daycare or is fighting a stubborn bacterial infection, Dr. K. Sushma provides accurate diagnoses, targeted treatments, and strategies to build their natural immunity safely.

A pediatrician checking a child with an infection

When an infection needs emergency care: If your child is extremely lethargic, has a stiff neck, a rash that looks like tiny bruises (petechiae) and doesn't fade when pressed, or is an infant under 3 months with a fever, go to the nearest emergency room or call 108 immediately.

Building a healthy immune system takes time

It is incredibly frustrating when your child is constantly sick, especially during their first years of daycare or school. It’s completely normal for toddlers to get 8 to 12 mild viral infections a year. Our job is to help you distinguish between healthy immune-building illnesses and serious infections that need medical intervention.

What we evaluate

Diagnosing and treating childhood infections

Children’s immune systems are still learning. We evaluate all types of infections to ensure they heal properly without complications.

Viral Infections

Managing the flu, RSV, Hand-Foot-and-Mouth disease, and common respiratory viruses with supportive care.

Bacterial Infections

Targeted antibiotic treatment for painful ear infections (otitis media), strep throat, and pneumonia.

Urinary Tract (UTIs)

Investigating unexplained fevers and painful urination to treat UTIs before they affect the kidneys.

Skin Infections

Treating impetigo, cellulitis, painful abscesses, and stubborn fungal infections like ringworm.

Gastrointestinal

Evaluating stomach bugs, food poisoning, and prolonged diarrhea to prevent severe dehydration.

Tropical & Seasonal

Prompt testing and careful monitoring for Dengue, Typhoid, Malaria, and monsoon-related illnesses.

When to visit

Signs an infection needs medical attention

When rest and home care are no longer enough.

Persistent Symptoms

Refusing to Clear

A fever that lasts longer than 3 to 5 days, or a cough and thick nasal discharge that has lasted over two weeks.

The "Double Sickness"

Sudden Worsening

When your child seemed to be recovering from a cold but suddenly spikes a new fever and feels much worse (a strong sign of a secondary bacterial infection).

Frequent Recurrence

The Endless Loop

When your child is getting back-to-back ear infections, tonsillitis, or UTIs that require investigation beyond just another round of medicine.

What happens

Your child's visit, step by step

1

Symptom timeline

We start by establishing exactly when symptoms began and how they have evolved, which is the best clue to distinguish viral from bacterial.

2

Thorough clinical exam

Dr. Sushma checks the ears, throat, lungs, skin, and lymph nodes to locate the specific source of the infection.

3

Targeted testing

If needed, we order specific tests—like a rapid strep swab, a urine culture, or a Complete Blood Count (CBC)—to confirm the diagnosis before prescribing heavy medications.

4

Rational prescribing

If it is a bacterial infection, an antibiotic is prescribed at the precise weight-based dose. If it is viral, we focus on safe, effective symptom relief.

5

Recovery and immunity plan

Guidance on hydration, nutrition, and when your child is no longer contagious and can safely return to school or daycare.

Before your visit

What to bring

Helping us treat the infection accurately

Fever and symptom log

Notes on what time the fever spiked, how high it was, and when specific symptoms (like vomiting or a rash) first appeared.

List of all current medications

Bring the actual bottles of any fever reducers or antibiotics they have already taken, so we know exactly what is in their system.

Previous lab reports

If blood or urine tests were already done at a local lab or another clinic during this illness, bring the results with you.

Vaccination card

To verify protection against severe preventable infections like Pneumococcal disease and Typhoid.

Common questions

Questions parents often ask

Why isn't my child being prescribed antibiotics?

The vast majority of childhood illnesses (colds, flu, sore throats) are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only kill bacteria. Giving antibiotics for a viral infection will not help your child recover faster, but it can cause diarrhea and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Is it normal that my child is always sick?

Yes, especially in the first two years of daycare or school. A child can have up to 12 minor viral infections a year as their immune system encounters new bugs. As long as they recover well between illnesses, it is usually a healthy sign of a developing immune system.

What are the signs of a UTI in a baby or toddler?

Because young children can't tell you it hurts to pee, a Urinary Tract Infection often presents simply as an unexplained high fever, extreme irritability, vomiting, or unusually foul-smelling urine.

Can we manage Dengue fever at home?

Often, yes. Mild to moderate cases can be managed at home with strict guidance on hydration, rest, and daily monitoring of blood counts (platelets and hematocrit). However, close pediatric supervision is absolutely mandatory to catch any warning signs early.

My child is feeling better. Can I stop the antibiotics early?

No, never. Even if your child feels 100% better, you must finish the entire prescribed course. Stopping early allows the strongest bacteria to survive, which can lead to a much worse, harder-to-treat infection.
