Finding the triggers so your child can get back to simply being a kid

From mystery rashes to a cough that won't go away, childhood allergies can be stressful and restrictive. Dr. K. Sushma helps identify the root causes—whether food, environmental, or seasonal—and creates a clear, safe action plan for your family.

Signs of Anaphylaxis (A Severe Allergic Emergency): If your child suddenly has trouble breathing, swelling of the lips/tongue, or a severe rash spreading rapidly after eating or a sting, use an EpiPen (if prescribed) and go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Allergies don't have to control your child's life

It can feel overwhelming to navigate diets, playdates, and outdoor activities when your child has an allergy. Our goal is not just to diagnose the problem, but to give you practical, manageable strategies so your child can safely participate in all the normal joys of childhood.

What we evaluate and manage

Allergic reactions can show up in many different ways across the body. We look closely at all of them.

Food Allergies

Reactions to common culprits like cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and wheat.

Skin & Eczema

Managing atopic dermatitis, chronic dry patches, contact dermatitis, and unexplained hives (urticaria).

Respiratory & Asthma

Chronic coughs, wheezing, and allergy-induced asthma triggered by exercise or the environment.

Seasonal (Hay Fever)

Allergic rhinitis causing endless sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, and nasal congestion during certain seasons.

Environmental & Pets

Reactions to indoor triggers like dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander from cats or dogs.

Insect Stings

Evaluating unusually large or systemic swelling reactions following bee, wasp, or mosquito stings.

When to suspect an allergy

Signs it's time for an evaluation

Sometimes, what looks like a common childhood illness is actually an underlying allergy.

The "Endless Cold"

Persistent Runny Nose

If your child has clear nasal drainage, a nighttime cough, or rubbing their nose constantly for weeks without a fever, it’s likely allergic rhinitis.

Mystery Rashes

Itchy, Dry Skin

Recurrent red, raised hives or chronically dry, scaly patches (especially behind the knees or inside the elbows) often point to eczema or contact allergies.

Tummy Troubles

Digestive Reactions

Consistent vomiting, diarrhea, or severe fussiness/colic specifically occurring after eating certain foods or drinking milk.

What happens

The allergy detective work

1

A detailed clinical history

This is the most crucial step. We will discuss exactly what happened, when it happened, the environment, and what your child ate leading up to the reaction.

2

Targeted physical examination

Dr. Sushma will examine the skin, listen to the lungs for wheezing, and check the nasal passages and throat for signs of chronic inflammation.

3

Discussing testing options

Not every allergy requires a test. If necessary, we will recommend specific, targeted blood tests (IgE) or refer you for skin prick testing. We avoid broad, unnecessary allergy panels.

4

Creating an Avoidance Strategy

We work with you to figure out how to practically and safely remove the trigger from your child's diet or environment without causing nutritional gaps.

5

Emergency Action Plan

You will leave with a clear, written plan on what medications to use (antihistamines, inhalers, or epinephrine) and exactly when to use them if an accidental exposure happens.

Before your visit

What to bring

Helping us find the trigger faster

Photos of the reaction

Hives and rashes often disappear by the time you reach the clinic. Clear photos on your phone are incredibly helpful for diagnosis.

A symptom and food diary

If you suspect a food allergy, keep a 3-to-5 day log of exactly what your child ate and when the symptoms occurred.

Current medications & inhalers

Bring the physical bottles, tubes of eczema cream, or asthma inhalers your child is currently using so we can check the dosages and techniques.

Previous test results

If your child has had any previous allergy panels or blood tests done elsewhere, bring the reports to avoid repeating tests unnecessarily.

Common questions

Questions parents often ask

Will my child outgrow their allergy?

It depends on the allergy. Many children outgrow allergies to milk, egg, and soy by the time they are school-aged. However, peanut, tree nut, and seafood allergies tend to be lifelong.

Do you recommend large allergy testing panels?

Generally, no. Broad testing panels often show "false positives" to foods a child is actually tolerating perfectly well, which leads to unnecessary dietary restrictions. We prefer targeted testing based on your child's specific clinical history.

When should I introduce common allergens to my baby?

Current medical guidelines actually recommend introducing common allergens (like peanut butter and eggs) early, around 6 months of age, as this has been shown to *prevent* the development of allergies. We can guide you on how to do this safely.

Is it a cold or allergies?

Colds usually come with a fever, thick yellowish mucus, and last 7-10 days. Allergies feature thin, clear mucus, lots of itching (eyes/nose), no fever, and can last for weeks or months while the trigger is present.

Does my child need to see a specialist (Allergist)?

Dr. Sushma can diagnose and manage the vast majority of childhood allergies, eczema, and mild-to-moderate asthma. If a condition is extremely severe, requires complex desensitization (immunotherapy), or is unresponsive to standard care, we will coordinate a referral to a trusted Pediatric Allergist.
